I have always loved the MacGregors. It's how I first discovered Nora Roberts. My only frustration is in having to rebuild my collection from scratch.While many of the stories are stand-alone tales, if one has to begin again, this is a great starting place.

The beginning of the stories of the MacGregor clan. As usual, this is an outstanding story, well written with characters you care about.
Meet Ian McGregor the Patriarch of the infamous clan McGregor. Nora Roberts doesn't usually write non-fiction, but she presents a good representation of the time period surrounding the Scottish rebellion at Culldon. The original Serena McGregor claims to hate her brother Coll's friend, Brigham Langston. But,time will tell. Discover how the McGregors come to America.
Nora Roberts has created a wonderfully romantic love story set against the backdrop of Scotland's doomed Jacobite rebellion.
Coll MacGregor, eldest son of the MacGregor clan laird, returns from Paris with his closest friend Brigham Langston, earl Ashburn, an English nobleman. Coll and Brigham are Jacobites, as is the MacGregor family, who are willing to risk all to put their Stuart King back on the throne of Scotland and England. The two men travel together to Scotland to meet and gather the clans in preparation for the arrival of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie, and war.
When they reach the MacGregor home in the Highlands, Brigham is prepared to meet Coll's family, but he is taken totally unaware by the beautiful, vibrant, hot tempered Serena MacGregor, Coll's eldest sister. Sparks fly and tempers flare, as Serena makes her views known about all Englishmen, and Brig, the 'Sassenach,' in particular. As war plans are fleshed out, Brig and Serena fall in lust and then in love. The characters are wonderful and the mixture of humor and intensity, with the historical background, make for a winning combination.
The secondary characters, the MacGregor clan, its retainers, and Brigham's valet really add to the novel and make the story come to life. They each have their own tale to tell and their presence does much more than act as filler between the chapters where Serena and Brig interact.
"Rebellion" is a wonderful light read. I went through it in an evening and became quickly absorbed. If you are a fan of historical fiction, and/or Scottish romances, as I am, that is definitely a plus. ENJOY!!

I recommend this book to any and all who enjoys a great story! This story spans time. It is ahistorical romance but could have taken place during any war through time. The characters are so real and alive. I want to read the rest of this series.
My FAVORITE Nora Roberts book of all time!!! Brigham and Serena are SEXY as HELL when there together!!! The PASSION between these two is so DAMN HOT it should be a SIN!!! The LOVE these two have for each other is so BEAUTIFUL its TIMELESS...
It begins in 1735 when Serena MacGregor’s home in the Highlands is invaded by British dragoons and her mother is raped by their leader who wants to shame a Highland’s chief’s wife. And that night hatred for the English was born in Serena. Ten years later, in 1745, her brother Coll brings home his friend, Brigham Langston, whose mother might have been a MacDonald but he is English.
Serena means to hate Brigham but ends up falling in love. Brigham wants the fiery tempered lass and means to have her. But there is a matter of the Jacobite Rising of 1745 that will interfere.
It’s a time of rebellion in the Highlands as the Scots, sick of English oppression, long for their Bonnie Prince Charlie, their “king across the waters” to return and reclaim his throne. The Germans may reign in England but the Scots want their true king restored.
When I read about the Battle of Culloden that took place in 1746 and see the images that represent that fateful day, I am always deeply saddened. Not just for the battle that was lost or the thousands of Scots slain, but for the cruelty of England inflicted thereafter on a generation of Highlanders. The English destroyed a way of life.
Roberts brings this time in Scotland’s history to life with superb storytelling, wonderful characters and brilliant dialog. Rich in historical detail and passion-filled love. This is a keeper. I fell in love with Brigham whose heart beat to the Highlands though he was an English lord. And I cheered on Serena as she finally decided to claim the man her own heart could not deny.
First published in 1988, this is the story of the historical roots for Roberts’ contemporary MacGregor series. I am so sorry she gave us only two historical romance novels before moving on to other genres as her historicals are very, very good.
I just love the MacGregors Family, even though in our ever day lives don't turn out like the lives in these book, it makes you feel good to escape and be apart of this family's love, laughter, ups and downs. Even though they came from money each one worked hard and made there own way in life. The Power between the blood lines are amazing.
